Hailing from different continents and having risen to fame in totally different ways, Kim Kardashian and Victoria Beckham may seem like an unlikely duo. But as it turns out, they have quite a bit in common — not least, their own clothing labels and various levels of dabbling in reality television.

And as different as their respective aesthetics may seem, they’ve both made turtlenecks part of their signature style.

The turtleneck is the odd garment which stands for both sleek, urbane elegance and unabashed nerdiness. On Ms. Kardashian and Ms. Beckham, of course, a turtleneck brings to mind previous style icons such as Edie Sedgwick, Marilyn MonroeAudrey Hepburn and Lauren Bacall.

Although some people dismiss the turtleneck as an outdated shape reserved for school nurses and over-the-hill professors, Ms. Kardashian and Ms. Beckham remind us that it’s a sophisticated, elegant and minimalist fall and winter necessity.
