TEANECK – State Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg (D-37) said on Wednesday that she supports the construction of a casino in North Jersey, including in the Meadowlands region of her home county of Bergen.

“Yes, I do support it. I think we are in the right geography to attract a huge audience from the New York and New Jersey metropolitan area,” said Weinberg after a meeting jointly held with State Senate President Steve Sweeney (D-3) to highlight the importance of maintaining social service programs during a difficult budget season. “[A casino] goes with what’s being built in the Meadowlands in terms of entertainment.”

Weinberg’s positive reference to the American Dream Meadowlands project now under construction was followed by a jab at the negative fate of another Meadowlands landmark.

“I’m just sorry that the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority chose to close the Izod Center [in a January vote] in a completely inappropriate and I think illegal manner,” Weinberg said. “That will be dealt with sometime over the next couple of weeks.”

When Weinberg was asked by PolitickerNJ if a North Jersey casino could negatively impact the struggling casinos of South Jersey’s Atlantic City, Sweeney, sitting next to Weinberg at an impromptu news conference in her Teaneck office, politely interjected.

“We have to have the discussion,” Sweeney said. “Part of the solution to Atlantic City is opportunities in the northern part of the state. Where they are, obviously, I’m open. We’ll come up with a process to determine where. This is a discussion that we can’t avoid anymore. We’re not going to avoid it. We’re going to have that discussion, and we’re going to figure it out.” Weinberg backs building of North Jersey casino
