Power Clashing on TV: Hipster Heroines Share Fashion Quirks in Comedies (Slideshow)

'Kimmy Schmidt,' Hannah Horvath, Dr. Mindy Lahiri and 'Broad City' gals put a new sartorial spin on arrested development

This is Kimmy Schmidt

This is Hannah Horvath
As played by Lena Dunham on HBO's GIRLS.
This is Dr. Mindy Lahiri

They all have certain things in common...
...like love of the dance.
Being inappropriately dressed for dancing
Come on girl, leave the backpack at home!
Right? Like this isn't bar attire!
But I love it more than I love body-con dresses, so....

When not clubbing, the outfits can sometimes still resemble "movement clothes."
Ilana wears to work what Hannah wears clubbing.
Jean jackets are clutch
Bringing the 90s back in a big way.
As is the "hoodie under jean jacket" look
Like a "Belieber" thing?

And purple backpacks never hurt
Herschel sale? Be honest.
Though a spin on the denim coat is a surprisingly classy touch.
Let's admit it: Hannah might be the most "style-conscious" of the all the characters.
If you had to define these women's signature looks:
1) Bold patterns 2) Oddly-fitted/crop-top apparel 3) lots of layers 4) Good use of yellow, pink and sparkles. 5) Sometimes backpacks.

Ilana in a bright yellow rain jacket.
Hannah wearing bold (albeit muted) dotted blouse.
Okay, bonus round time:
Broad City girls in bold patterns.

All of Kimmy's outfits have bright yellow, but notice how this is a cardigan and the one in the jean jacket photo is a sweatshirt.
Quick, which character is this?
You can tell it's Ilana because she's somehow pulling it off.
Who is this?
This one you know is Mindy because of the glasses.

Keep guessing....
Another dimension of design. Literally, a whole extra dimension.
And one more:
God, I envy the woman who can pull this off.
Another sign of "arrested development" in your characters?
They go to work still looking like kids playing dress-up.

Strawberry Shortcake is such a cute outfit
But maybe not great for work detail?
Isn't Mindy a DOCTOR?
Doctors can dress like that?
Yup, adult women here, move along, nothing to see.
Yo unless it's that Whole Foods monster again.

Forget the Manic Pixie Dream Girl, the latest pop culture zeitgeist would better be described as “Manic Girl, Full Stop.” Think of Ellie Kemper as the star of Netflix’s new show The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: her elementary-school palette reflects not just her sunny disposition by also a kind of arrested development…she hasn’t grown (fashion-wise) past a 14-year-old who was taken by the doomsday cult. Or what about Hannah Horvath (Lena Dunham) from GIRLS, Dr. Mindy Lahiri (Mindy Kaling) from The Mindy Project or Ilana Wexler (Ilana Glazer) from Broad City? I’d almost believe they were wardrobe-swapping, except each outfit looks more outre than the next*.

So what makes up the Manic Girl Young Lady’s (MYL’s) wardrobe? Click through this slideshow to get our sartorial take.

Note: I purposely chose not to include Zooey Deschanel’s Jess from New Girl, whose character is more aesthetically-oriented towards twee outfits and traditionally “girly” attire. (And was one of the OG MPDGs, so isn’t eligible for this round anyway.)

*Which is not to say I don’t love this whole trend, seeing as these are the shoes I chose to wear to work today.
