Seen in the streets: Garcia and Mainor not going away

Dumped by the Hudson County Democratic Organization (HCDO), two incumbent assemblymen spent Saturday afternoon pounding pavement and looking very much like candidates as the state heads toward a filing deadline next week.

Assemblyman Carmelo Garcia (D-33) could be seen harvesting petition signatures in pursuit of a reelection bid off the line.

So too did Assemblyman Charles Mainor (D-31) collect signatures, leaving those around him with the impression that he intends to run despite lacking support from the county Democratic organization.

The HCDO discarded Garcia earlier this month in favor of Annette Chaparro, a longtime Hoboken resident and employee of City Hall. Garcia spent two years at war with Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer. Chaparro is Zimmer’s pick to replace him.

Mainor is a casualty of Jersey City changing mayors.

Former Mayor Jerry Healy negotiated his candidacy with state Senator Sandra Cunningham (D-31). When Healy went down in 2013, Mainor no longer had an ally in City Hall. Healy’s conqueror, sitting Mayor Steven Fulop, passed over Mainor this year in favor of Angela McNight, founder and CEO of a local nonprofit.
