Dumped from the LD31 line in Hudson County, Assemblyman Charles Mainor of Jersey City will burnish a county badge in the next iteration of his public career, specifically the badge of a Hudson County undersheriff, a source told PolitickerNJ.
Mainor lost the support of the Hudson County Democratic Organization (HCDO) this year to Democratic Committeewoman Denise Ridley.
A police detective by trade, the assemblyman initially showed an unwillingness to leave office, carrying forward with plans for a fundraiser despite a report of his imminent displacement.
The source told PolitickerNJ that reports of a Mainor deal for undersheriff irritated Freeholder Anthony “Stick’ Romano of Hoboken, also a law enforcement veteran who had expressed interest in the job.
Former Assemblyman Sean Connors was also said to covet the position. He failed to secure it before transitioning to a local candidacy on a 2013 ticket with Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop. Connors lost.
Mainor could not be reached for comment, but a source close to the assemblyman said it’s possible the deal had fallen apart this afternoon, leaving Mainor no choice but to run off the line.
