Angela McKnight, who runs a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit in her hometown of Jersey City, will run for an Assembly seat in LD31 with the backing of the Hudson County Democratic Organization (HCDO).
McKnight will replace Denise Ridley, who left the ticket last week after talks between state Senator Sandra Cunningham and Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop collapsed.
As the replacement for Assemblyman Charles Mainor (D-31), Ridley had the backing of both Jersey City power players. But Fulop’s allies balked after hearing about Mainor circulating petitions to run again, a source said.
A Ward F resident hand picked by the mayor, McKnight will run with former Menendez State Director Nick Chiaravalloti, who joines the ticket out of the Bayonne portion of the district.
It is unclear at this time if Mainor intends to pursue re-election off the line.
