FRANKLIN TWP. – It was Somerset County Democratic Chair Peg Schaffer’s battle for the funniest politician tonight at the Imperia, and it came down finally to former U.S. Ambassador to Germany Phil Murphy versus Assemblyman John Wisniewski (D-19) in a crowded field of contenders.
The two possible 2017 candidates for governor grabbed a microphone and – each in his turn – regaled the crowd of Democrats, which included Vice Chairman Zenon Christodoulou, Assemblyman Joe Danielsen (D-17) and Schaffer’s law partner Joel L. Shain, the former mayor of Orange.
In the end, Wisniewski’s joke about Murphy’s expensive tastes trumped Murphy’s Old Country reflections as the audience clapped loudest for the assemblyman from Sayerville.
Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop also put in an appearance at Shaffer’s party fundraiser but left early, ceding the friendly battle of wits to his two rivals.
