Facing a federal indictment on corruption charges, U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) will temporarily step down as the ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, according to a report on CNN.
In a statement later issued by his office, Menendez said he spoke earlier today with Democratic Leader Reid and informed him that he would temporarily step down as Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He also sent Leader Reid a letter stating his intentions.
“I am hereby notifying you that I am temporarily stepping down as Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee,” the Senator wrote. “While there is no caucus rule that dictates that I do so, I believe it is in the best interests of the Committee, my colleagues, and the Senate which is why I have chosen to do so.”
