Smith stressed the importance of independent thinkers who can work with others. He said Jersey City businessman Alston reached out to him for the support and he complied.
Alston said Smith’s endorsement humbled him, recognizing the former lawmaker as “someone who is of an iconic stature in the African-American community of Jersey City.”
“It was like when Ted Kennedy bucked the Democratic National Party and endorsed Obama in 2007 instead of the party favorite Hilary Clinton,” Alston said of Smith’s support for him.
Alston and Flores appear to have a significant mechanical challenge as they try to upset the Hudson County Democratic Organization (HCDO)-backed Nick Chiravallotti of Bayonne and Angela McKnight of Jersey City.
