By all accounts, a fashion show is hardly a warm and loving environment. It can be slightly intimidating, even for the most seasoned show-goer, a veritable who’s who of the upper echelon of the industry, where one’s status is confirmed based on a seating assignment.

But last night, when the Fashion Industry of Technology presented its Future of Fashion Runway Show, there was nothing but love in the room. Graduating students bubbled over with excitement, their energy filling the Fred P. Pomerantz Art and Design Center, which also housed magazine editors, bloggers, retailers and a handful of celebrities.

Speaking of celebrities—upping the star wattage of the night were bold faced names like Nicky Hilton, Jonathan Cheban, Real Housewives Ramona Singer and Sonja Morgan, as well as true fashion talents like Lorraine Schwartz and Francisco Costa, creative director of women’s collection at Calvin Klein. (The brand underwrote the evening.)

Nicole Richie hosted the festivities, looking every inch a fashionista in a white sheath dress accessorized by her pink hair. “This is the future of fashion,” she quipped to thunderous applause.

Dr. Joyce F. Brown, president at FIT, welcomed the guests and gave a heart-warming introduction to the evening, citing the students as inspirations who will no-doubt go on to be the next big names in global fashion. She then introduced a behind-the-scenes video presentation featuring professors, critics and industry leaders who chose to mentor these young students in making it to the runway.

But the main event was a massive runway show with 77 looks selected by industry judges like Refinery 29’s Anne Georgia Greenberg, blogger Bryanboy and designer and critic Bonnie Young. Students presenting included Critic Award Winners Sofia Menasse, who showed a black wool oversized coat with belt detail, black rib turtleneck and black denim pant, and Veronica Romero Schon, whose look featured a gray wool vest and a black wool and organza embellished skirt.

A highlight of the show was when stylish little tots worked the runway to showcase some of the childrenswear looks to the oohing and aahing of the audience. Closing out the evening were the award-winning graduates who walked the runway with their winning looks. Tears were shed, moments were had, and fates were sealed.
