The Parisian department store Le Bon Marché Rive Gauche is playing host to Brooklyn’s hottest brands, beginning September 3. For six weeks, Brooklyn Rive Gauche will celebrate the food, fashion and culture of our own—if you are standing on Manhattan facing downtown near the bottom—left bank.
While some Brooklynites will balk at travelling half way across the world to buy stuff more easily found on their doorsteps, they might agree that actually finding all these Brooklyn-based brands without the use of a map and a Metro Card is fun. Others might find it interesting to view their home turf through the vision of the famous Parisian store. In particular, an audiovisual installation by French DJ duo Polo and Pan will offer a quirky, even whacky version of Brooklyn imagery, from Coney Island attractions to the Brooklyn Bridge. Located on the first floor, the haute clubbers’ Parisian charm should prove the perfect match.
Brooklyn Rive Gauche is not Le Bon Marchés first international collaboration, Brazil and Japan were past attractions. A huge range of Brooklyn merchandise is lined up. Catbird, the go-to engagement ring makers for the borough’s hippest kittens and herbal fragrance purveyors D.S. Durga will join bigger brands such as Kiehls in the main store, while Empire Mayonnaise and Bjornquorn popcorn will join the Brooklyn lineup in the celebrated Grande Épicerie food market.
