PERTH AMBOY – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) will be in New Jersey this evening for a fundraiser toward his 2016 presidential bid at the Colts Neck home of a mutual friend of U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ).
Menendez is an ardent backer of fellow Democrat former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for president, but he knows Rubio well. His fellow Cuban American sits on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that Menendez chaired, and the two lawmakers share views on their parents’ homeland.
PolitickerNJ asked Menendez what he thinks of Rubio as a presidential candidate a short while after a prominent New JerseyDemocrat said the word continues to circulate in party circles that the most fearsome opposition ticket for Clinton would consist of Rubio running with Governor John Kasich with Florida-Ohio battleground squeeze play implications.
“Look, I will say that he is incredibly smart and talented and the face of a new generation,” Menendez said on Hobart Street earlier today. “To the extent that he can get through a crowded Republican field he poses the risk [to Clinton] of a generational choice.
“Some of the choices he has made may not appeal to general election voters,” the senator added, “but he is a very challenging candidate for president.”
