The environmental NGO’s UK division is making investigative journalism into a key part of its global campaign, reported The Guardian.
“What we can do with investigations is change the dynamic around an issue,”Greenpeace UK executive director John Sauven told The Guardian. “It’s increasingly important in a world that is full of greenwash and empty promises but not much delivery on the ground.”
The investigations unit is staffed with a team of journalists from well-respected outlets like The New York Times and the BBC, who will focus on changing the dynamic around issues central to Greenpeace’s mission such as climate change, deforestation, oceans and fishing. “Our investigations are a fundamental part of our campaigns,” according to the Greenpeace UK website. We expose those responsible for environmental crimes. We have a global reach, we have research teams and millions of supporters in countries around the world.
The investigations unit will consist of a half-dozen staffers, along with a network of freelancers and specialists, and has been promised the financial resources to take on big stories, as well as technological resources such as satellite imaging and drones.
