Upcoming Fulop Labor Breakfast Burnishes His Pockets of Union Support

In that backroom war for labor support and with the implicit understanding of the division of labor in New Jersey, Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop has put together a breakfast of union brass with which he hopes to make a statement, particularly in the face of repeated trumpeting by his 2017 rival, ironworker Senate President Steve Sweeney (D-3).

According to the invitation, the September 30th $5,000 per-host and $1,000 per-person fundraiser for the Election Fund of Steven Fulop 2017 will take place at the Chandelier Catering Hall on Broadway in Bayonne.

The presence on the host committee of the Carpenters defies the notion, argue Fulop allies, that Sweeney has sewn up Building Trades support. The heavy presence of public sector labor defines what could be a political pen-ben hangover for Sweeney, who controversially joined Republican Governor Chris Christie on that 2010 reform front.

The event is technically designed in support of Fulop’s reelection bid as mayor, but, in the words of one source close to the preparation, “everyone knows he’s running for governor” not mayor in 2017, including those on the host committee.
