Sweeney Backs Currie for Another Two-Year Term as Dems Chairman

Senate President Steve Sweeney (D-3) this morning issued a letter backing Democratic State Party Chairman John Currie’s pursuit of a second two-year term as chairman of the Democratic Party.

The support by the powerful South Jersey politician of the northern chairman signaled what insiders anticipate will be a cascade of support for Currie statewide.

Sources say Senator Nick Sacco (D-32), Speaker Vincent Prieto (D-32), Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop and the Hudson County Democratic Organization (HCDO) are likewise fully supportive of a second, two-year term for Currie.

Sweeney’s full letter:

“I write this letter today to endorse my good friend John Currie for another term as Chairman of the New Jersey State Democratic Committee.

“Since he took office in 2013, Chairman Currie has been an essential part of our fight to expand core democratic ideals and middle class values across the Garden State.

“It’s no surprise that under his leadership, we have expanded our strength in the legislature, as embodied by our successes in this month’s elections.

“While other political parties continue to be fragmented by ideological fault lines, New Jersey’s Democrats remain a unified force for progressive values and economic prosperity for all.  It is for these reasons and countless others that I eagerly throw my entire support behind Chairman Currie.  I heartily encourage all of our party to do the same.”

With regards,

Steve Sweeney
