Jacobs worked as Fulop’s Director of Communications for five months.

Ryan Jacobs joined Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop’s team as the Director of Communications in August. Now, he is leaving his post to write a book about the presidential politics of the 2016 race.

Despite that short tenure, Jacob’s said that it has been a “huge privilege” to work with Fulop.

“He’s the real deal, a gifted leader,” Jacobs said in a statement. “And I hope I have the chance to work with him in the future.”

Fulop is likely considering a 2017 gubernatorial run. Jacobs’ initial hire—and the subsequent shift of former spokesperson Jennifer Morrill to an assisting role in the administration—was seen as a sign that Fulop was gearing up for a gubernatorial run.

“We appreciate all Ryan’s done for our team and the City,” Fulop said in a statement. “And we’re excited for him as he moves on to what’s clearly a great, next opportunity.”

Before coming to Jersey City, Jacobs worked as Chief Speech writer for U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx.
