State Senator Joe Kyrillos (R-13) is slated to be the guest of honor at a Vin Gopal Civic Association event next week where the proceeds will help combat homelessness in Monmouth County. While the cause is a noble one, is Kyrillos stepping on anyone’s toes by agreeing to be in such a notable place for Monmouth County Democratic Chairman Vin Gopal?
In this November’s election, primarily Monmouth LD11 saw some major losses in the assembly. Incumbent Republican Assemblywomen Mary Pat Angelini and Caroline Casagrande lost to challengers Democrats Joann Downey and Eric Houghtaling. Those losses left state Senator Jen Beck as the lone-standing Republican in her district.
With rumors swirling that Gopal might be a potential challenger for Beck as she runs for reelection in 2017, the choice of the Monmouth County senior senator to support Gopal could providing a further boost to Gopal’s favorability after the big wins in the assembly this year. It could also demonstrate that bipartisan communication may be possible if Gopal were elected.
According to Kyrillos, the event is really about the causes, not political divisions.
“I am happy to help raise money for two outstanding organizations,” he said. “It is looking like it will be a great and successful night. I like Vin and I am happy that I can join him for a bipartisan effort to raise the money and bring awareness to the causes at hand.”
With the holiday season upon us events such as the one hosted by the Vin Gopal Civic Association—which will take place on Tuesday December 8—might prompt some to put politics aside in favor of the spirit of giving.
The Vin Gopal Civic Association encourages individuals to support the causes they think are important. This year the group has chosen to focus on homelessness and a local EMS organization.
PolitickerNJ attempted to contact Beck for comment but she could not be reached.
“I talked to the senator about this in June,” said Gopal. “It has nothing to do with politics.”
