TRENTON – State Senator Mike Doherty (R-23), a movement conservative who is an oft-whispered 2017 Republican candidate for governor – this afternoon refused to support Senate President Steve Sweeney’s (D-3) North Jersey casino referendum bill.

He said he doesn’t like that portion of the bill that designates tax revenue from two new casinos in the north in part for the revitalization of Atlantic City.

“God bless Atlantic City, but it’s been a failure,” Doherty said on the floor of the senate.

“The revenue [from new casinos should go to fund state programs all over the state,” said the Republican senator. “It’s a bridge too far for me, so I’m going to vote no.”

Other Republican senators – state Senator Kevin O’Toole and senator Steve Oroho – signaled their desire to vote aye on Sweeney’s bill.

Ultimately, Doherty joined five other senators in opposing the bill.
