What brought Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, Courtney Love, Joan Jett, Ellen DeGeneres and Beck together last night? None other than Hedi Slimane, the moody and mysterious designer behind the Saint Laurent label.
Eschewing the brand’s Parisian birthplace (and the current NYFW shenanigans), Saint Laurent descended upon Los Angeles last night for an absolute fashion spectacle. Celebrities flocked to the Palladium to take part in the extravaganza, where Sylvester Stallone mingled with Mr. Bieber and Lady Gaga cozied up to Ms. Love. Even Zoë Kravitz had a moment with her mother, Lisa Bonet.
As for the clothing? They were aimed towards the musicians in the building, with nods to Jimi Hendrix, in the form of dramatic military jackets and three-piece suits that Frank Sinatra would have donned (well, minus the skinny trousers). A sparkling tuxedo jacket emblazoned with planets could easily be worn by Mick Jagger and there was a Stevie Nick-esque dress with golden peacock feathers. Even an emerald green gown with feathered details was easily imagined on Florence Welch’s ethereal frame.
Basically, Mr. Slimane created a romantic ode to rock stars, as he is wont to do. This time though, it was in the form of a 93-look fashion show, not a print advertisement.
Amid rumors that Mr. Slimane is on the outs at Saint Laurent, a show of this magnitude just might have the power to put that chatter to rest. At least until March, when the designer heads to Paris for his next show.
