TRENTON – Bernie Sanders’s continuing progressive gyrations won’t budge notoriously scrappy and anti-establishment-minded state Senator Ronald L. Rice (D-28) from backing Hillary Clinton for president.
“I was with Hillary before and I’m sticking with her,” Rice told PolitickerNJ. “I think she’s a great candidate and what the country needs now with Obama leaving the White House.”
Having weathered an old fashioned 15-rounder in Iowa on Monday night, Clinton raised her own arm in victory prior to the judges issuing the call – barely – in her favor. Now the establishment Democrat heads into New Hampshire and the probable humiliation of a double digit upending by Sanders.
It doesn’t matter to the veteran Rice, who says her opponents have unfairly targeted her.
Despite many of his constituents going with Barack Obama in 2008 and the political establishment that he’s fought for years in his home county of Essex backing Clinton, Rice sided with Clinton against Obama in that primary year. Part – or arguably all – of his motivation had to do with the fact that his arch foe, then-Mayor (and now U.S. Senator) Cory Booker backed Obama.
