Steve Lonegan is Ted Cruz’s state campaign director. He also absolutely supports the reelection of U.S. Rep. Leonard Lance (R-7) over Lance’s Republican Primary challenger David Larsen, despite the fact that Larsen backs Cruz for president.
Lance, for the record, backs Gov. Chris Christie for president.
But he has the standing endorsement of Lonegan, arguably New Jersey’s most active and visible movement conservative, who today is celebrating Cruz’s caucus win last night in Iowa.
“Leonard and I go way back,” Lonegan told PolitickerNJ. “He had a bad vote on cap and trade but he’s since said he would never do that again, and he’s grown more conservative over the years.”
Lonegan said Cruz won’t get involved in down ballot races. “He’s not going to bracket with candidates at the district and local levels,” said the movement conservative. “There’s no reason to do that.”
