Mercer County had their County Convention last night. Of note, powerful Ocean County GOP Chairman George Gilmore attended as an, “observer.”
The final tally for the presidential endorsement was as follows:
(Rubio was not nominated)
Mayor Kelly Yaede of Hamilton made an impassioned nominating speech for Trump, while businessman Scott Sipprelle (who impressed in a 2010 stab at then-U.S. Rep. Rush Holt’s seat) made the pitch for Kasich. The Hamilton delegates, who dominate the county party, went for Trump, while a coalition of Princeton, West Windsor, and Hopewell Township delegates banded together to support Kasich.
In a rules related quirk, only Kasich properly filed noticed within the seven day notification deadline. So he could have won the county endorsement with a simple plurality, or one vote switching sides. Trump and Cruz were nominated from the floor, which thus required a 60% threshold to win the county endorsement. So the convention ended with no Presidential endorsement.
