Union County Democratic Party Chairman (and Assemblyman) Jerry Green (D-22) told PolitickerNJ that he intends to back Speaker Vincent Prieto’s bill on Thursday. The veteran party leader/lawmaker says he’s voting for it out of respect for Prieto, leader of the Democratic caucus, whose bill clashes with efforts by South Jersey lawmakers and Governor Chris Christie.
Christie and Sweeney want to derail Prieto.
But Green – the subject of aggressive sleeve-pulling from both North and South – said he trusts the speaker’s remedies for the scuffed up ocean gaming town, yet doubts Prieto’s bill will go anywhere even if it survives the Assembly this Thursday.
“You’ve got the senate it has to pass and the governor, who has to sign off on it,” noted Green, who doesn’t see the bill getting through that particular bi-level saw mill. “I like to feel, for the sake of Atlantic City, that all three parties [Christie, Sweeney and Prieto] have to sit down, and short of that happening, I don’t see anything positive,” Green admitted.
The assemblyman wouldn’t speculate on whether Prieto has 41 votes on Thursday as assembly people continue to field arm-twisting phone calls.
