Hillary Clinton versus Donald Trump?
Try North Jersey versus South Jersey.
As the rest of the country considered the 2016 presidential contest, a New Jersey insider swatted away the subject as hardly worth his time just three days ahead of the Assembly’s vote on the Atlantic City state takeover bill.
“The presidential contest is an afterthought,” said the source. “This is all about the gubernatorial contest.”
That would be the 2017 gubernatorial contest.
“The presidential stuff doesn’t mean a lot here,” the source said. “That’s how much power the governor of New Jersey has; there are just so many things happening.”
The context, of course, is that Speaker Vincent Prieto’s (D-32) Atlantic City showdown with Senate President Steve Sweeney (D-32) serves as a precursor to next year’s gubernatorial drama, with the speaker (and Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop) poised to weaken Sweeney as a statewide concept, and Sweeney positioned to muscle flex ahead of his own guv run.
That said, the ever civically-minded state to the north of us is doing its part to spread presidential political fever in the Garden State. According to this story, Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream founders Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield of Vermont will be in New Brunswick today campaigning for prez contender Senator Bernie Sanders (D-VT).
