While Monmouth County has been traditionally Republican, Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop seems to be focusing much of his effort on securing support from the county’s Democrats.
According to New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission (ELEC) reports, Fulop has donated $25,000 in 2016 so far to the Monmouth County Democrats. In September, he will host a $2,500 per plate fundraiser at the Liberty House in Jersey City on behalf of Monmouth Democratic Chairman Vin Gopal.
Fulop’s support comes as the Democrat seemingly prepares to make a run for New Jersey governor in 2017.
While gubernatorial hopeful former Ambassador Phil Murphy lives in Monmouth, he has not been as generous with his giving as Fulop. As of the July 21 ELEC filing made by the Monmouth Dems, Murphy had yet to donate. Senate President Steve Sweeney, another likely candidate, has also yet to donate in 2016 but, unlike Murphy the candidate also did not make any donations to the county party organization in 2015. Last year Murphy donated about $19,000 to the county party.
Fulop has been a solid fundraiser for the organization and has raised about $60,000 to $70,000 every year for the past three cycles. With his $25,000 this year, the mayor seems poised to match or surpass those quantities.
