Here’s the More Than 260 Galleries That Will Descend on Miami for Art Basel

Despite talk of an art market slump and concerns over Zika virus, the show will go on

Art Basel in Miami Beach, 2015.

It’s finally September, the leaves are beginning to fall and the art world is kicking into high gear. Over the next few weeks, dozens of gallery openings happen across New York City, beginning a steady wave of activity that will build in intensity until December, when the art world heads south for its own version of spring break in Miami Beach. And while some may forgo the traditional partying this year, either because of art market jitters or the rising concern over homegrown cases of Zika virus in Miami-Dade county, plenty will still throw caution to the wind and make the pilgrimage.

269 galleries are set to participate in 15th edition of Art Basel Miami Beach, which runs December 1-4, the centerpiece in a week-long art fair extravaganza that will take over the city with satellite fairs, exhibitions and parties. There are 21 newcomers to the 2016 fair, including The Box and Various Small Fires from Los Angeles, Clearing and JTT from New York, House of Gaga from Mexico City, Galerie Greta Meert from Brussels, High Art from Paris and Nanzuka from Tokyo.

The fair is divided into varied themed-sectors, some of which separate solo exhibitors from more curated, historical shows. There’s even a special area for upstart galleries. Highlighted in the Survey section, which features solo presentations of artwork created before the year 2000, will be don’t-miss works by African-American collage artist Romare Bearden (DC Moore Gallery) and Bay Area street artist Margaret Kilgallen (Ratio 3).

In Positions, where large scale projects by a single artist can be found, Dane Mitchell will emit an artificial scent used by hunters as a form of camouflage in an interactive installation with RaebervonStenglin gallery, and Adrià Julià will cover Dan Gunn’s entire booth with an installation inspired by Pablo Picasso’s iconic Guernica painting.

Meanwhile, a section dedicated to young galleries and emerging artists, Nova, will feature “a disquieting installation” at 47 Canal gallery’s booth by Anika Yi, filled with animal furs, chicken skin and “synthetic flora,” according to a release. Yi’s visual assemblage will investigate extreme experiments in biotechnology.

The fair’s sprawling program will also feature presentations of public art, talks and film, some of which will spill out into the neighborhoods and venues surrounding the Miami Beach Convention Center. Let the games begin!

A complete list of Art Basel Miami Beach participating galleries can be found below, and on the fair’s website.
