You might call it a tale of two award ceremonies, or just another night in Los Angeles, but October 24 will go down in history as the night that two New York-based fashion glossies headed West to celebrate.

With a mostly fashion-minded approach, the InStyle Awards was attended by A-listers and their respective hair stylists, makeup artists and clothing stylists. As the Time Inc. magazine has a major focus on red carpet style, this event was simply an extension of their print coverage. Further, they had some majorly buzzy names in attendance, including Shailene Woodley, who was recently arrested for peacefully protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline; she took home the Advocate award last night. Other attendees who are of utmost interest included Nicole Kidman and Sofia Richie, for separate, albeit obvious, reasons.

Meanwhile, ELLE kept the focus on their locale: Hollywood. Particularly, they honed in on the women of Hollywood, inviting major actresses Helen Mirren, Lupita Nyong’o and Amy Adams to mingle among producers, directors and other powerful female players in the business. There were just a few men in the room, including Ben Affleck and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (though the latter was also spotted at the InStyle bash). The best celeb spotting of this whole event was Kristen Stewart and her new girlfriend, St. Vincent, who held hands as they made their exit.

Here’s how the events stack up…

ELLE Women in Hollywood

Felicity Jones, Kristen Stewart, and Lupita Nyong'o.

Where: Four Seasons in Beverly Hills
Years It’s Been Going On: 23
What’s the Deal Here: Ladies in the industry were the main focus of this evening event, with host (and ELLE editor-in-chief) Robbie Meyers and emcee Anthony Anderson. While the joys of being a female actress were celebrated, so were the lows, including how women in Hollywood are portrayed, talked about and, of course, treated.
Who Won Awards: The following were all honored for their “creative contributions to the world of film”: Amy Adams, Kathy Bates, Felicity Jones, Anna Kendrick, Aja Naomi King, Helen Mirren, Lupita Nyong’o and Kristen Stewart.
Who Else Attended: Ben Affleck, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Dakota Fanning, Jeremy Renner, Vanessa Hudgens, January Jones, Michelle Williams, Nina Dobrev, Michelle Monaghan and Lucy Hale.

InStyle Awards

Keith Urban, Nicole Kidman and Isla Fisher.

Where: Getty Center
Years It’s Been Going On: 2
What’s the Deal Here: Newly appointed InStyle editor-in-chief, Laura Brown, hosted the dinner and award ceremony, which was all about red carpet fashion. For example, Julianne Moore and Jennifer Connelly’s stylist and Beyoncé’s makeup artist both took home awards, and Tom Ford even graced the room with his presence.
Who Won Awards: Nicole Kidman for Style Icon, Tom Ford for designer, Priyanka Chopra for Breakthrough Style Star, Leon Bridges for Man of Style, Shailene Woodley for Advocate, Danilo for Hairstylist, Sir John for Makeup Artist, Leslie Fremar for Stylist.
Who Else Attended: Bradley Cooper, Laura Dern, Jourdan Dunn, Julianne Moore, Usher, Dita Von Teese, Olivia Culpo, Billy Eichner, Chiara Ferragni, Eva Chen, Nicola and Will Peltz, Sarah Hyland, Isla Fisher, Jon Hamm, Rachel Zoe, Lucky Blue Smith, Jeremy Scott and Sofia Richie.
