Senator Mike Doherty (R-23) today introduced a Senate resolution condemning professional athletes who fail to stand during the national anthem.
A graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and former Army officer, Doherty said protests popularized by San Francisco 49ers backup quarterback Colin Kaepernick are hypocritical and worthy of condemnation.
“Standing for our national anthem is a sign of respect for the millions of Americans who fought and died for all of us, including Mr. Kaepernick, to live in a free nation,” said the senator. “For Mr. Kaepernick and other professional athletes to protest while reaping all of the benefits of those sacrifices, including multi-million dollar salaries and lavish lifestyles, wreaks of hypocrisy at the highest level.”
Doherty’s resolution was introduced on October 20, 2016.
