Just one day into Miami Art Basel showings and we have an art casualty. One of Jeff Koons’ signature balloon dogs, a magenta pooch displayed atop a reflective silver plate, seemed to topple over without any explanation. “It just fell out of the display,” said Ally Shapiro, one of the few collectors who witnessed the incident and snapped the above iPhone photo. “The girl standing next to it had it cleaned up in five seconds.”

Luckily it was not one of the artist’s infamously pricy, one-of-a-kind dog sculptures, which have previously sold for over $58 million. The smaller work, displayed at the Design/Miami fair by French porcelain maker Bernardaud, was accompanied by two identical Koons sculptures in different colorways with suggested prices ranging from $8,000 to $9,000 to benefit MOCA.
Of course, should you not be able to visit Design/Miami this week, you can purchase your own edition of “Balloon Dog (Yellow)” here, just make sure it’s kept in a safe spot.
