Kensington Palace is notoriously tight-lipped. Sure, they occasionally share photos of the young royals on Instagram, update the world on Kate Middleton’s dresses and give hints as to where Prince Harry is traveling. Still, they very rarely inform the public of the royal family’s personal lives, including Prince Harry’s rumored liaisons, which are constantly discussed and dissected.
They’ve made an exception, however, by releasing a statement about Prince Harry’s new girlfriend, actress and philanthropist Meghan Markle, in which they confirm the rumors and ask for privacy.
The royal family last issued a serious statement in 2015, to protect Prince George from paparazzi. It seems to have worked; while he’s often caught at formal gatherings, there are few photos of the prince heading to school or playdates with pals.
The latest statement was issued by the communications secretary on Twitter, on behalf of Prince Harry. The frank statement touches on “the outright sexism and racism of social media trolls and web article comments” and “the substantial bribes offered by papers to her ex-boyfriend.” While marrying a prince might be many little girls’ dream at one point, this makes it sound more like a nightmare.

Prince Harry has been linked with quite a few women throughout the years, but he hasn’t confirmed a relationship since Cressida Bonas. This release shows how serious the couple might actually be. Perhaps this is the royal way of declaring a relationship Facebook official?
