Watson assumed the seat last year upon the retirement from the assembly of L. Grace Spencer, now a judge.

A former school advisory board member and a longtime Central Ward ally of the North Ward Democratic establishment, Speight would run on a ticket with state Senator M. Teresa Ruiz and Assemblywoman Eliana Pintor Marin.
