Adolf Hohenstein
Adolf Hohenstein (1854–1928) was a German painter, advertiser, illustrator, and set designer who is often dubbed the "father of the Italian poster art" and played a pivotal role in the evolution of graphic design in Italy. Born in Saint Petersburg, Russia, to German parents, Hohenstein eventually settled in Milan in the late 19th century. His lavish and vivid illustrations helped define the Art Nouveau movement in Italy, and he became the main artist for Ricordi, a renowned music publishing company. There, he designed posters for the premieres of works like Puccini's "Tosca" and "Madama Butterfly." Hohenstein's vibrant color palette, combined with his ability to convey complex emotions through simple designs, made him a seminal figure in both the Italian and international graphic art scenes.
