Cannupa Hanska Luger
Cannupa Hanska Luger is a multidisciplinary artist of Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara, Lakota, Austrian, and Norwegian descent. Born in 1979 in North Dakota, he grew up on the Standing Rock Reservation. Luger's work often bridges the gaps between cultures, highlighting the shared experiences while acknowledging the differences. Through a mix of media, including ceramic, fiber, and video, he confronts contemporary socio-political issues and challenges established historical narratives. One of his prominent projects, the "Mirror Shield Project," utilized mirror-finished shields during protests, like those at Standing Rock against the Dakota Access Pipeline, turning surveillance back onto law enforcement. Luger has exhibited his work extensively across the U.S. and internationally, bringing attention to indigenous voices and concerns in the contemporary art world.
