Cindy Sherman
Cindy Sherman, born in 1954 in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, is an influential American photographer and film director, renowned for her conceptual portraits. Sherman rose to fame as a part of the Pictures Generation, a group of artists working in the 1980s known for their critique of media culture and their pioneering use of appropriation. Her most famous series, "Untitled Film Stills" (1977–1980), features Sherman herself in a variety of roles and settings, reminiscent of film noir and European art-house films. Throughout her career, Sherman has continued to explore the construction of identity, the role of the media and the dynamics of gender and sexuality. Her work has been exhibited at major institutions around the world and is held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate in London and the Centre Pompidou in Paris, among others.
