El Greco

El Greco, born Doménikos Theotokópoulos in Crete in 1541, was a master painter of the Spanish Renaissance known for his dramatic and expressive style. He trained as an icon painter in the Byzantine tradition before moving to Venice, where he was influenced by Titian and Tintoretto. El Greco later settled in Toledo, Spain, where his unique style flourished. His early career in Spain was marked by religious commissions that showcased his elongated figures, bold colors and dynamic compositions. Notable works include "The Burial of the Count of Orgaz" and "View of Toledo." El Greco's art is housed in major institutions like the Prado Museum in Madrid and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. He passed away in 1614, leaving an indelible mark on Western art.
