Grace Hartigan
Grace Hartigan (1922–2008) was an American Abstract Expressionist painter known for her bold use of color and dynamic compositions. Born on March 28, 1922, in Newark, New Jersey, she emerged as a significant figure in the New York art scene during the 1950s. Hartigan's work often blended abstract forms with references to contemporary culture and everyday life, setting her apart from many of her contemporaries. Notable works include "The King Is Dead" (1950) and "Shinnecock Canal" (1957). Her paintings were characterized by their vigorous brushwork and vibrant energy. Hartigan's contributions to Abstract Expressionism were recognized with exhibitions at prestigious institutions like the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art. She continued to influence the art world as both an artist and a teacher until her death on November 15, 2008, in Baltimore, Maryland.
