'Joy' tells the story of the origins of IVF in the ‘60s and ‘70s, but it’s hard not to watch it through a contemporary lens as the real-life scientists and doctors portrayed are attacked in the film for their efforts. 

For a film about loneliness and death, it’s tender, intelligent and life-affirming without ever being maudlin and mawkish.
