Joana Vasconcelos
Joana Vasconcelos, born in 1971 in Paris, France, is a renowned contemporary Portuguese artist known for her large-scale, vibrant installations that blend traditional crafts with modern materials and techniques. Vasconcelos studied at the Ar.Co – Center of Art and Visual Communication in Lisbon and quickly gained recognition for her innovative and provocative works. Her art often explores themes of identity, gender and consumerism, incorporating everyday objects into elaborate constructions. Notable works include "The Bride," a chandelier made from tampons, and "Marilyn," a pair of high-heeled shoes crafted from stainless steel pots and lids. Vasconcelos's installations are characterized by their playfulness, scale and intricate craftsmanship. Vasconcelos has exhibited internationally, including at the Venice Biennale and the Palace of Versailles, where she was the first woman and youngest contemporary artist to have a solo exhibition.
