Katsushika Hokusai
Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) was a renowned Japanese ukiyo-e painter and printmaker during the Edo period. He is best known for the woodblock print series "Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji," which includes the iconic print "The Great Wave off Kanagawa." Hokusai's influence extended beyond Japan, impacting Western Impressionists like Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh. Over his lifetime, Hokusai went by more than 30 pseudonyms, frequently changing his name with each new artistic phase. His vast range of works, encompassing landscapes, kabuki actors, sumo wrestlers, and even the supernatural, reflects a deep exploration of both the mundane and the profound.
