Lucas Cranach The Elder
Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472-1553) was a German Renaissance painter and printmaker known for his portraits, religious scenes and mythological subjects. Born on October 4, 1472, in Kronach, Germany, he became the court painter to the Electors of Saxony in Wittenberg, where he gained prominence. Cranach was a close friend of Martin Luther and created numerous portraits of the Reformer and other key figures of the Protestant Reformation, contributing to the movement's visual culture. His work is characterized by its vivid detail, vibrant color and a blend of Gothic and Renaissance styles. Notable works include The Judgment of Paris and Adam and Eve.
