Manierre Dawson

Manierre Dawson (1887–1969) was an innovative American abstract painter. Born in Chicago, Dawson attended the Armour Institute, where he trained as an engineer. He began painting in his early twenties, and by 1910, he had developed a unique style of abstraction, making him one of the earliest American artists to work in this mode, even before the advent of European abstraction on American shores. Throughout his career, Dawson was deeply influenced by his background in engineering, often incorporating mathematical and geometric principles into his work. He balanced his passion for art with a career in orchard farming in Michigan, which may have limited his broader recognition during his lifetime. Today, Dawson's works are appreciated for their pioneering approach to abstract art and are held in numerous museum collections.
