Pauline Oliveros (1932-2016) was an American composer, accordionist, and a central figure in the development of experimental and post-war electronic art music. She was a pioneer in the field of sound studies and deep listening, a practice she defined both as the close listening to music and sounds and as a form of meditation. Oliveros explored diverse themes through improvisation, electronic music, teaching, and myth-making. Throughout her career, she emphasized the importance of listening in all human endeavors and championed the cause of marginalized and underrepresented voices in the music world.
