Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, born on April 16, 1940, was former reigning monarch as well as an acclaimed artist. She notably illustrated the Danish edition of J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" under the pseudonym Ingahild Grathmer and has shown her artistic versatility by designing set pieces for theatre and films. Her work in the latter includes contributions to the Royal Danish Ballet's "The Nutcracker" in 2001 and the 2009 film "De vilde svaner" (The Wild Swans). Her artistic endeavors have added a unique dimension to her role as a monarch.
