Sun Woo
Sun Woo, born in 1994 in Seoul, South Korea, is a contemporary visual artist known for her symbolic paintings that explore themes of pop culture, identity, and feminist issues. She was raised in Toronto, Canada, and later moved to New York to attend Columbia University, where she graduated with a BA in Visual Art in 2017. Woo now lives and works in Seoul. Her artistic practice oscillates between digital and analog techniques. Woo's work often starts with digital sketches made from images sourced online, which she then transforms into paintings using a combination of airbrushing and hand-painting techniques. This process allows her to create works that blend the softness of traditional painting with the precision of digital imagery. Sun Woo's paintings frequently address the psychological drives behind consumer culture and the fetishization of female bodies in media. Notable series include "Girls," which examines the sexualization of women in K-pop, and "Log-in to Paradise," which integrates elements from video games to comment on digital consumption. Her exhibitions have been held in various international venues, including solo shows such as "Invisible Sensations" at Carl Kostyál in London and "You Have a New Memory" at Woaw Gallery in Hong Kong. She has also participated in numerous group exhibitions across the globe.
