Titus Kaphar
Titus Kaphar, an American artist born in 1976, skillfully interrogates the history and representation of African Americans in art. His work, which encompasses painting, sculpture, and installation, often involves the physical manipulation of his materials to reveal the marginalization of African Americans throughout history. Kaphar's notable projects include "The Vesper Project," a deeply immersive installation that blurs the lines between fact and fiction, and "Shifting the Gaze," where he literally brushes Black subjects to the forefront of historical paintings. His piece, "Behind the Myth of Benevolence," powerfully recontextualizes the image of Thomas Jefferson to highlight the complex narratives of American history. Kaphar's contributions extend beyond his art; he co-founded NXTHVN, a New Haven-based incubator for artists and curators, demonstrating his commitment to fostering community and dialogue around issues of race, history, and representation. Through his work, Kaphar challenges viewers to reconsider and reimagine the role of art in social and historical discourse.
