Thomas Evans (AKA Detour)
Scroll through Denver-based artist Thomas Evans’ (aka Detour) Instagram, and you’ll learn more about art than you can from most art schools. The self-taught artist boasts close to 82,000 followers on Instagram.
When Evan isn’t producing murals, paintings, and other artworks, he’s teaching his followers everything he knows. Beginning each video with his trademark greeting, “Yo, what’s going on Internet,” he savvily reminds viewers to like and share his videos before offering advice. Recent discussions on his series, Art Tip Tuesday, include jealousy and envy in the artistic community, why his recent NFT experiments didn’t work, and a paint review of Golden Flat. Each is remarkable for its honesty and utility to other artists.
Evans explained that themes occur organically on his Instagram posts. “I have a lot of time on my hands because my whole life is dedicated to the arts,” he told Observer. “It leaves very little time for anything else.”
Looking to the future, Evans has his hands full with new projects now that venues are opening up. “There’s a ton of projects on my plate,” he said. “I’m helping to organize a mural gathering called Blkout Walls in Detroit—one of the first black mural festivals put together by a few of us that always participate in festivals. So some of my focus is now on logistics and helping other artists.”
