A.I.R. Gallery

A.I.R. Gallery was founded by 20 female artists—including Nancy Spero and Howardena Pindell—in New York in 1972. One of the first artist-run galleries in the United States dedicated to showcasing women’s art, A.I.R. Gallery has been instrumental in launching the careers of many notable artists, including Ana Mendieta and Judith Bernstein. The gallery’s influence extends beyond its exhibitions; A.I.R. has inspired the creation of similar women-run cooperative galleries, contributed to the feminist art movement and impacted the cultural fabric of its neighborhood.
