El Museo del Barrio
El Museo del Barrio is located at 1230 5th Ave, New York, NY and was founded in 1969 by artist and educator Raphael Montañez Ortiz. The museum is dedicated to Latino, Caribbean and Latin American art and culture. Its collection includes over 8,000 objects, ranging from pre-Columbian artifacts to contemporary works, featuring artists such as Rafael Tufiño, Ana Mendieta and Wilfredo Lam. El Museo del Barrio is housed in a landmark building that was once a school. Notable exhibitions include “Nuestra América: The Latino Presence in American Art” and “Taller Boricua: A Political Printshop in New York.” The museum offers a variety of educational programs, family workshops and cultural events fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of Latino and Latin American art and heritage.
