Don’t Mess With Texas Art Fairs: On Dallas During a Week of Auctions and Openings

A few blocks away from the Dallas Art Fair—with its collectors rich by oil spending loot on gorgeous works of art all of last week—is Dealey Plaza, where shots were fired at President John F. Kennedy. If an art dealer could find the time to leave their booth for 20 minutes, they could walk to the Texas School Book Depository, stand across from the grassy knoll, and perhaps come to some new conclusion—perhaps, that it's implausible that Lee Harvey Oswald could have fired that final shot from that angle to kill the president.

Collectors With Texas-Sized Fortunes Start Buying Big at the Dallas Art Fair

"We love the collectors down here," Stefania Bortolami told me at her gallery's booth at the Dallas Art Fair. And, oh, how does she love those flashy, jewel-bedecked Dallas collectors—she's already manage to sell a work by Piero Golia for a sum of $35,000, a price worthy of Texas. She noted that the artist is set to build one of his infamous chalets at the Nasher Sculpture Center down the street this fall, and that while the oil-slicked millionaires here like to throw money at basically everything, they also like supporting anything connected to Dallas.

Helen Frankenthaler Foundation Gifts the US Pavilion at the Venice Biennale $200,000

Now that everyone can wash their hands of Armory Week, it's time to look forward to the next red letter day on the global art world calendar—that would be the opening of the 56th International Art Exhibition La Biennale di Venezia. That's right, the Venice Biennale is just weeks away. Can't you just taste the Campari and soda already?
