Kunsthalle Basel

Kunsthalle Basel, established in 1872, is an art gallery located in Basel, Switzerland, that stands as Switzerland’s oldest and most active contemporary arts institution. The gallery is housed in a historic building designed by Johann Jakob Stehlin, featuring spacious, well-lit exhibition halls. Kunsthalle Basel is known for its commitment to showcasing cutting-edge contemporary art through temporary exhibitions, often presenting the work of emerging artists alongside established figures. It does not have a permanent collection, allowing it to focus on dynamic, rotating exhibitions that highlight new artistic trends and innovative concepts. Read more about Galleries.

A bright, contemporary gallery space with large windows overlooking a cityscape, featuring an installation by Swivel at Independent 2025. Sculptural works resembling oversized plastic grocery bags filled with produce, chips, and receipts are suspended on the wall and placed on the floor. Wall-mounted vertical arrangements of snack bags are secured with bold-colored straps. The installation humorously critiques consumer culture and everyday consumption through hyperreal, soft-sculpture renditions of common grocery items. The space is minimal, allowing the playful and detailed works to stand out.
